CMA soccer has stellar season despite late regional championship loss

2022 CMA Soccer Sectional Champs Photo
Culver Military Academy's 2022 soccer season ended Saturday night versus Fort Wayne Canterbury in the IHSAA regional championship. The Eagles lost to the Cavaliers 1-1 (4-1 on penalty kicks) after a tie in regulation and a scoreless double overtime.

Their season began with four straight wins, with the second win vs Wawassee seeing coach Kevin Green's 100th career win. Green, who is in his 11th season as head coach, praised his team's early season performance.

The team hit a midseason lull, as injuries began to derail the team's early success. The team went 3-3-1 in the middle of the schedule. The team would regroup in typical Culver Eagle fashion, going 3-0 before entering the sectional tournament.

The Eagles dominated the IHSAA sectional tournament, outscoring their opponents 20-2. A bracket that had perennial powerhouse programs Concordia Lutheran and Manchester. The Eagles' momentum carried on as they returned to Culver Academies for a first round regional matchup against Northwestern, winning 4-2. They would lose in the championship versus FW Canterbury on penalty kicks.

Although the Eagles fell short of a regional championships, this team should be proud of their 2022 accomplishments.
  • 14-4-1 record
  • Sectional champions (first since 2015)
  • Regional finalist (first finals appearance since 2011)
  • 2nd best season in last 16 years (2015, 15-3-1, lost in 1st round of regionals)
  • 71 goals scored (bested 2015's team by 5)
  • 18 goals against (goalies Quigg and Christansen combined for 11 shut outs, 74% save percentage)
In addition to the tremendous team success, the team had several high performing individuals who were instrumental in the team's season outcome.

Leo Brummell '23 (Highlands Ranch, CO) earned the "Most Consistent" team award, as well as First-Team All District and Academic All-State from the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association, scoring 22 goals and 12 assists.

Oscar Cano '24 (San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico) earned team MVP, scoring 23 goals and 7 assists. Cano's 23 goals is the highest number of goals scored in the last 16 years, previously held by Adrian Juraidini in 2015. The record is 32, held by Luis Quintana.

Jed Lee '23 (Sacramento, CA) earned the "Playmaker" award with 7 goals and 8 assists. Lee also earned academic all state through the ISCA.

The following individuals also garnered end of season awards through the ISCA.
Even though this team came up short in the end, they will go down in Culver Athletics history as one of the best boys soccer teams the school has ever seen.
