CGA Track and Field wraps up indoor season, Johnson wins fifth vault title

The Culver Academies track and field teams finished their indoor season Tuesday. The CGA squad set an especially strong pace with four school records broken during the three early-season meets.

The girls 4x800-meter relay team set a school indoor record at the Hoosier State Relay Trials on March 11, running a time of 10:05.07. The team consisted of Margaret VerMuelen '23, Grace Gibbs '24, Lilly VerMuelen '23, and Quinn Bird '24. Emma Zimpleman '26 set a freshman indoor record in the 60 meter dash at 8.52 seconds. In the pole vault, Susie Bourdier '24 cleared 10'6", breaking her previous school record of 10'0" set just a few days prior. Finally, Lena Spiller '23 set a CGA high jump record at 5'6" and is looking to break it again later this year.

Notable performances from CMA include the 4x800 relay team (Jaxson Warner '24, Dionte Obertein '24, Hunter Miller '23, Will Ruszkowski '24) placing second at the Hoosier State Relay trials with a time of 8:29.05 and Michael Patipe '24 placing 5th overall in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.05.

IN OTHER NEWS
Scott Johnson '94, who also serves as Culver's director of marketing and communications, recently competed in the 2023 USATF Masters Indoor Championships in Louisville, KY, and won his fifth pole vault title in six years. His vault of 14'5" feet was the highest vault at the entire event, across multiple age groups. Johnson also competed in the indoor pentathlon. His scores in the 60-meter hurdles (10.17 seconds), long jump (16 feet, 5 inches), shot put (31 feet, 8 inches), high jump (4 feet, 9 inches), and 1,000 meters (3:38.73) were enough to place him second in his age group (45-49).
