Looking back on the 22-23 CGA basketball season so far

With two months of basketball in the books, let's take a look at some of the best moments and top performers from the 2022-23 CGA basketball team.

The team started strong and gained three victories in the first five days of the season. They came out to a 3-0 start while outscoring opponents 126-56. They would then run into two tough opponents in Tippy Valley and North Miami, losing by single digits to both.

Coach Bill Murchie and his coaching staff challenged his team to keep fighting and never give up. Those words would carry the team to another win streak, this time four straight, including a nail-biter against Tri Township on November 29. The girls were on the road for most of December, which included a three-game away tour of Ohio. They finished an even 3-3 in the final six games to close out the first half, with wins against South Bend Riley, Argos, and Hudson (Ohio).

At the halfway mark, CGA basketball is 10-5, with some impressive wins and a couple lopsided losses. The good news is the girls finish the regular season with five of eight at home, and an opportunity to post more wins than last season (13), most under coach Murchie.

Top games to watch again:
  • November 1 vs Trinity School at Greenlawn – A real reason for optimism for the future of CGA basketball. Several freshmen showed out, including three-point specialist Piper Brumm draining a couple early. The bench really shows out in the JV game as well.
  • December 3 vs Fort Wayne Canterbury – Points, points, and more points. The team had its most complete performance to date. They were riding high after a back-and-forth match the game prior. Speaking of which…
  • November 29 vs Tri Township – Five lead changes in the last 1:04. Senior Lena Spiller scores the go-ahead bucket with 1.2 seconds left to win it for the Eagles.
