Kam Hodgson '26 and
Kate Fortune '26 have been awarded November 2024's Student-Athletes of the Month.
KATE FORTUNE
Coach Kerry Hassall says Fortune embodies the spirit of varsity girls rowing.
"Kate brings an infectious energy to every boat and practice she's a part of, uniting and motivating her teammates with her passion," Hassall said. "Whenever Kate is not rowing, she is revving up her crew, building excitement for the work we are about to complete."
On Nov. 2, the girls rowing team competed at the Head of the Hooch Regatta in Chattanooga, TN.
At the regatta, Fortune was a crucial member of the U19 8+ (under-19 eight-person boat). Hassall said the U19 8+ was a competitive category with 90 crews.
Fortune's crew earned an automatic qualifying spot for next year, a first for Culver in this category.
Hassall also said that before launching for the race, Fortune led the team with a prayer.
"She led it with a powerful, heartfelt message that resonated deeply with all of us."
Hassall said Fortune's words were inspiring, natural, and filled with passion, creating a moment they all discussed even hours later because of the energy it gave them all before the race.
"I continue to be inspired by Kate on a regular basis, as she elevates her teammates with her work ethic at practice and in the classroom," Hassall said. "I am so excited to see what Kate achieves as she dives into winter training, ready for spring racing."
