For the second time in program history, and for the second consecutive year, CMA Swim & Dive has earned the title of Sectional Champions.
Last night, CMA traveled to nearby Warsaw for Sectional No 4 of the 2021-22 IHSAA Swim & Dive post-season series. The diving portion of the event took place on Saturday, during which CMA senior
Reid Omilian captured first-place, giving his team 20 points towards the Championship effort, and advancing to the diving regionals tonight.
CMA's senior class swimmers were well represented in the scoring as well. Princeton Swimming signee
Mitchell Schott took first-place in both the 200 and 500 freestyle events, while also contributing to the first-place finishing 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams consisting of seniors
Jacob Maibach,
Sam Tullis, and junior
Cabot Ellert. Tullis captured a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle event, off only .94 of a second to breaking five-minutes, making for a new personal best.
Other notable senior performances included personal best in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke by
Carlos Herrera, and after narrowly missing the finals,
Max Gifford finished 10
th overall in the 100 backstroke, earning his team an extra seven points. Combined, Culver's senior class scored 110 team points of a total of 409.5.
"Our seniors put in so much time developing themselves and our team," said head coach
Joshua Brown. "Everyone who hoisted the trophy last night owes them a huge round of applause."
Ellert matched personal best times in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke, good enough for second and third-place finishes, respectively. Junior
Jacob Maibach laid down a performance in the 50 freestyle good enough for first-place and advancement to the State Finals. Additionally, he was narrowly beaten out for a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle.
Schott (200 & 500 freestyle), Maibach, and the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams each advance to the State Finals.
Juniors
Max Guerra Jimenez (200 & 500 freestyle),
Leo Chen (200 individual medley & backstroke), and
Will Kelley (100 fly & 100 breaststroke) each set new personal bests during the meet. Added with
Ethan Arnold's sixth-place diving finish, Culver's junior class contributed 131 points to the winning total.
"Our senior class this year is so powerful," said Brown. "But our junior class is strong and I have high hopes that many of them will step up and fill those senior roles as we look toward next season."
Sophomore
Bucket Youvan collected 27 points of his own, claiming personal best times in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Freshman
Jack Collins also had personal bests in the 100 fly and 200 individual medley, combing for 29 points. Freshman diver
Joshua Neary also tallied five team points in his first ever 11-dive meet.
CGA Swim & Dive also captured its Sectional Title in 2022 after being narrowly defeated by the host school Warsaw in 2021, the sixth in team history. 2022 marks the first time in Culver Swim & Dive history that both teams hold Sectional Titles simultaneously.
