The Culver boys Varsity A hockey team competed at the Indiana State High School Hockey Association (ISHSHA) 4A state tournament this past weekend in South Bend.
Varsity A finished the weekend with a 5-1 win vs Hamilton Southeastern (HSE), a 1-2 OT loss vs Evansville Purple, a 4-3 win vs the same HSE team and a 1-3 loss vs Zionsville.
Varsity B played in the 2A state tournament in Fort Wayne. The team finished with a 5-6 loss vs Columbus Icemen, a 2-1 win vs Brebeuf and a 1-5 loss vs Bloomington Blades.
Despite both teams not making it to the state championship, the Varsity A team was recognized with two academic awards during the tournament.
To promote high academic standards for high school hockey players, the ISHSHA awards program honors both individuals and teams.
Each year, scholarship awards are presented to senior athletes at the State Invitational Tournament. The awards are made based on academic achievement, citizenship, community, and school contributions, leadership, dedication and sportsmanship.
Sikander Babar '24 was awarded the Dr Jeffrey Watt STEM Academic Award.

This award recognizes high school senior athletes who demonstrate academic excellence in high school mathematics and have chosen a career in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Dr Watt has been dedicated to youth and high school hockey in Indiana for more than 35 years. He has worked individually with student-athletes and encourages all players to seek higher education.
The Culver Varsity A team was awarded the Henry G. Schallert Team Academic Award for posting a 3.70 combined team GPA.
The ISHSHA established this award in 2003 to recognize the ISHSHA team or teams with the highest average GPA total. The award is named in honor of Henry G. Schallert, a dedicated educator.
Congratulations to Babar and the entire Varsity A team on their achievements.
