Culver Names New Sailing Coach

Connor Corgard was named Culver Sailing's head coach on April 4. Corgard brings a wealth of knowledge of the sailing world to Culver, with over 12 years coaching and 14 years sailing experience.

Corgard, 28, grew up in Michigan and Minnesota. He first became aware of the Culver sailing program when he competed against Culver while he was on the Minnetonka High School sailing team. After high school, Connor attended Roger Williams University in Rhode Island as a finance and math major. While in college, he competed on the school's sailing team, where he earned All-American honors and performed as a skipper and crew. He also created and coached a traveling sailing team, DART Sailing, which grew to encompass the entirety of the Midwest youth sailing scene.

After college, Corgard moved to Auckland, New Zealand to serve as the coach of the New Zealand Junior and Youth Sailing National Teams. During his time there, he led the team to international recognition while earning 12 world championship podium finishes across nine of the major junior and youth sailing classes. This included producing seven world champion athletes and helping two international teams secure spots at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2021. He has worked as a data analyst, reconnaissance consultant, and team dynamicist for syndicated leading into the 2021 America's Cup. Additionally, Corgard served as head of commentary for the 36th America's Cup, where Emirates Team New Zealand attained their 2021 victory. Prior to his arrival at Culver, Connor has been pursuing his own Olympic ambitions, training day in, day out in the international 470 class.

"When I look at Culver, I see potential," said Corgard. "The facilities and the sailors that get to use them are top notch. Having seen all corners of the sport, my ultimate goal is to open my athletes' eyes to the world of sailing and what it has to offer. There is so much potential in sailing for anyone to find their true passion. Whether it's coaching, sailing, boat design, rigging, or any type of administrative role, I want to help people find their passion and pursue it.
