CMA prep hockey wins the GameSheet Prep Cup

It was an action-packed last weekend of winter leave for the Culver Military Academy prep hockey team. The Eagles were on the road for a three-day tournament located at Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts. Along with playing top-tier competition, the CMA student-athletes also had the opportunity to learn about the University of New Hampshire's hockey program. They toured the Whittemore Center Arena and talked to several UNH men's hockey coaches.

The GameSheet Prep Cup started in 2020 and has quickly evolved into one of the top hockey events in North America. This iteration saw eight of the best prep hockey programs battle for the championship. CMA joined Dexter Southfield, Northwood School, St. Andrew's College, Nichols School, Kimball Union Academy, Mount Saint Charles Academy, and Frederick Gunn School.

The first match was against Kimball Union Academy. After being tied 4-4 heading into the third period, first-classman Jacob Padgett scored late to claim the opening game, winning 5-4. Other scores were made by Cole Barrett, Luke Hogan, and Phil Lalonde, who had two.

In the semifinals match, the Eagles had little trouble with Frederick Gunn School, winning 3-0. Luke Hogan scored again, and Kyle Bergen got on the board with two scores. November athlete of the month, Vaughn Makar, posted another shutout on the season.

The championship match pitted the Eagles against St. Andrew's College, a team that CMA had already played twice earlier in the season, splitting the series 1-1. The game was tightly contested once again. Kayson Un Yi, Cole Barrett, and Isaac Fecteau all scored, and the game ended up tied 3-3 after regulation, leading to a shootout. Barrett and Un Yi both would score in the shootout, and the Eagles went on to win 4-3.

This Prep Cup win shows just how far the CMA prep hockey team has come in just one season. The Eagles lost all three of their Prep Cup games last season and ended the season with 27 wins. This year, the Eagles won all three of their Prep Cup games and are well on pace to eclipse their 2021-22 win total.

Next up for the CMA prep hockey team is a two-game road trip against rival Shattuck St. Mary's on January 14-15.
