South Bend IN. Culver traveled to South Bend Tuesday to take on South Bend St. Joseph. The two squads renewed the school rivalry after missing the contest last year due to COVID restrictions.
          Â
The game started slow for both teams as they both missed their first attempts from the field.
Cooper Farrall started the scoring for the game with a drive in the paint and a three on the next possession. St. Joe stormed back quickly with two threes of their own to take a 6-5 lead.
Daley Stein scored his oddest three points of the season as a lob attempt to Farrall missed its target and instead drained through the hoop, giving him his first attempted and made three of the year.
Fola Fayemi got a score from the lane, however St. Joe responded right away to both scores and kept the game tied at 10 for the end of the first-quarter.
          Â
Thomas Collins hit a three to open the second quarter, but South Bend got a three-point play of their own on an and-one conversion. Fayemi got Culver's next three scores from in the paint, but St. Joe kept firing back with back-to-back threes. St. Joe got as much as a five-point lead, but Farrall kept it close and ended the quarter with an and-one to keep the game at two.
          Â
Farrall regained the Culver lead after half with a three after a St. Joe miss. The Indians responded with five points of their own right after.
Jokubas Skurdenis hit the next shot for Culver and Farrall made a two-point try to re-tie the game at 31. Farrall made a pair of free-throws from the line to give Culver a two-point lead, although this was short lived as St. Joe quickly tied it back up.
Colin Chupp had his first points of the game, but despite a good defensive effort from Fayemi, St. Joe responded again and tied the game up once again at 35 to end the third quarter.
          Â
Neither team could quite pull away from the other and the fourth-quarter proved to be yet another battle between the two sides. Collins started with a pair of free-throws, but Culver had no answers on defense for St. Joe's offense and the game was quickly tied back up. Farrall went one for two from the line after St. Joe scored five straight points, putting Culver down four. Farrall made another free-throw and a two-point basket to get the game within one. St. Joe made a pair from the line, but Fayemi quickly responded with a bucket in the paint. Collins kept St. Joe within reach with a three after St. Joe made two quick buckets in the lane. Ultimately, Culver couldn't hold St. Joe on defense enough to go on the run they needed to catch up. St. Joe hit their free-throws at the end of the game and a late score by Farrall wasn't enough to propel Culver forward as they lost 48-52.
