The Eagles soar to a 49-35 win over Victory Christian Academy

Valparaiso IN. Culver traveled 46 miles to Valparaiso for a mid-week matchup against the Lions of Victory Christian Academy. Culver was coming off back-to-back losses and were looking to rebound, while VCA was looking to pick up a non-conference win having won one game in their last three. The game was also a later start for Culver as the game took place at 7:00 central time.

No team could quite pull away early as they traded blows. Cooper Farrall started scoring with some high-low action with Daley Stein. Stein got his own two points on a put back from a missed shot from Farrall. Farrall did the same on a missed free throw from Stein on their next trip down the court. VCA kept up, however, and Culver only got as much as a four-point lead in the first-quarter. Jokubas Skurdenis had two strong drives in the lane for two, but the Lions kept up with their own baskets. A late steal and score from Thomas Collins gave Culver a narrow, one-point lead to end the quarter, 12-11.

VCA opened the second with a big three to give them their largest lead of the game so far. Collins didn't let that last long, though. He hit a two-point pull up after a steal, then hit a three after a big defensive stop, then hit a second three to give Culver a seven-point swing and a six-point lead. Culver kept their momentum and Fola Fayemi finished a strong and-one attempt. Colin Chupp added his own two shortly after from the paint. VCA converted a four-point play their next possession to halt the Culver run, but Farrall added two more before the end of the half to extend Culver's lead to 9. The halftime score was 27-18.

The Eagles kept strong after the half with Farrall scoring the first five points for Culver. Victory Christian tried to keep up but a trip to the line for Amir Gates and another inside bucket from Fayemi kept the Lions at bay.  While not a high-scoring quarter, the Eagles held VCA to single digit scoring for the second straight quarter in one of their best defensive performances of the year so far. Gates added one more from the line to end the third 36-25 as Culver kept pulling away.

VCA couldn't get a run going in the fourth to try and catch up. Chupp got to the line early and made one of two. Fayemi continued his dominance inside and got another strong layup in the paint. Victory Christian hit a three, but Farrall got a pair of paint scores to keep the Eagle lead at 14. Gates kept the party rolling with an athletic and-one bucket, and Farrall got another bucket in the lane. A Victory Christian three would end scoring for the game with just under a minute left. VCA opted not to foul to try and mount a comeback and Culver gets their 10th win of the season 49-35.

Culver will play their next contest against the 11-4 Blue Devils of Tipton High School on Friday and 7:00 at Tipton.
