Culver struggles to keep up with an exceptional Chesterton squad, loses 48-62

Culver IN. Culver played what is likely the toughest team on their schedule on Saturday in the undefeated #1 Chesterton Trojans. Culver had a full week of practice after their CMA Winter Classic win as their Friday game against West Lafayette was canceled due to concerns over COVID. The night started with a performance from the CMA Corps of Drums to a packed crowd with a filled student section. The atmosphere was electric the whole night and the packed crowd and one of the marching base drums made for a noisy gym for the top matchup.

The game started as a heavyweight slugfest with both teams trading scores. Cooper Farrall responded to an opening bucket from Chesterton with one of his own on a drive to the paint. He made another two-point bucket and a three to give Culver a three-point lead before Chesterton tied it back up with points in the paint. A two from Jokubas Skurdenis and another three from Farrall gave Culver a four-point lead, but a three at the end of the quarter from Chesterton brought the game back to within one, ending the quarter 12-11.

Chesterton opened up the quarter with a bucket again, however Thomas Collins got the gym electrified with a huge and-one three pointer which helped regain a three-point lead for Culver. Chesterton kept battling back, though and despite scores from Daley Stein and Amir Gates, the Eagles couldn't pull away from the Trojans. Toward the end of the third, Culver started to get into foul trouble as Farrall and Gates both picked up their third personals before the half which forced both of them to sit for the remainder of the second. Chesterton took advantage and scored seven to end the half, only broken up by a Collins three to keep the game to two possessions. The half ended 25-29.

Halftime featured a thrilling three-point contest between stars from the CMA Baseball and CMA Lacrosse programs in which the Lacrosse team one in overtime by one point. After the half, Culver went on a quick 5-2 run to take a one-point lead thanks to buckets from Collins and Skurdenis, and free-throws from Farrall and Collins. Farrall picked up his fourth personal foul shortly after which allowed Chesterton to start to pull away. Fola Fayemi's post score was Culver's last bucket of the quarter and Chesterton went on an 11-2 run to end the third.

Despite their best scoring quarter of the game, Culver couldn't quite catch up to Chesterton. Skurdenis hit a pair of free throws early, but Chesterton responded soon after with two of their own. Farrall and Gates also got to the line and added three more points, but Gates got his fourth personal foul and had to play more conservative the rest of the game. Farrall had Culver's next six points, but they couldn't put a run together as Chesterton answered with their own points despite Culver's efforts. Gates and Collins added another layup each but Gate's fifth and Farrall's fifth personal foul sealed any chance of a late game comeback as the Trojans remain unbeaten with a score of 48-62.
