Culver IN. Culver Academies met up with the Caxys's of Lake Forest Academy in the Championship game after the Caxys's held off a late run from Gary Lighthouse. Culver was coming off a shaky win against Fort Wayne Canterbury and was looking to return to their pre-break form.
          Â
After missing their first two shots, Culver jumped ahead on eight straight points from three different scorers.
Jokubas Skurdenis started with a drive in the paint, then
Thomas Collins and
Cooper Farrall scored back-to-back threes which forced a Lake Forest timeout. The Caxys's made a push with two and-one conversions, but a
Fola Fayemi post score kept the two-possession lead for the Eagles. Farrall and Collins both hit another three to end the first quarter 16-8 in favor of the Eagles.
          Â
Their next quarter was possible their best quarter of the year so far. The quarter started with a Skurdenis three, keeping the momentum going. Fayemi hit another bucket in the paint to start the quarter with a five-point run. Lake Forest hit a pair of free throws and those would be their last points until a layup and a free throw at the end of the quarter. Culver scored 16 unanswered points in that span. Collins hit two more threes,
Daley Stein had a pair of scores in the paint and added a shot from the charity stripe. Skurdenis added a shot from the lane and Senior
Andrew Macheca added a big three which got the student section fired up. The 21-5 quarter gave Culver and comfortable 25-point lead at half with a score of 37-13.
          Â
Lake Forest started to find themselves offensively, but couldn't contain the Eagles on defense as Culver quickly answered any score by the Caxys's. Farrall made culver's first shot of the quarter from beyond the arc and Skurdenis added another two shortly after. Collins had two more threes in the quarter as he continued to light it up from deep range. Culver managed to get to the line a lot this quarter and Farrall, Skurdenis, and Fayemi all got points from the foul line. Despite their best offensive quarter yet, the Caxys's still couldn't make a dent in the ever-growing lead as the Quarter ended 54-26.
          Â
Farrall and Stein started the quarter with dominant performances inside as Stein hit two shots and Farrall hit one from the paint. Lake Forest responded with a three, but Farrall hit a pair of free throws and Collins hit his 7
th three of the game which capped off a game high 21-point scoring night off 7/10 from deep. Lake Forest tried to make some runs but Culver kept answering, with Farrall hitting a three and Fayemi getting another physical score inside. Ultimately, the Caxys's couldn't get any close as the two squads tied on scoring for the quarter at 16 as the Eagles won the game 70-42.
          Â
The win not only secured the CMA Winter Classic title for the Eagles, but it was also head coach
Mark Galloway's 300
th career win, his 165th during his time as Culver's head coach. Culver will play their next game in Fleet Gymnasium next Saturday against the #1 team in the state, the Chesterton Trojans.
