Culver wins in convincing fashion over Fort Wayne Bishop Luers, advance to 5-1

Fort Wayne IN. The Eagles traveled to Fort Wayne for their first midweek game of the year to take on the Knights of Fort Wayne Bishop Luers. Culver had a few standout performers as they won soundly 62-37 on the road to move to 5-1 on the year.

The first quarter started close as both teams traded buckets. Thomas Collins started the game with a three, Amir Gates, Colin Chupp, and Daley Stein all added a two-point field goal in the opening of the quarter. Fort Wayne was able to stay in it though and matched Culver's scores to stay within three. Cooper Farrall made a three from the corner after a great extra pass from Andrew Macheca to allow Culver to pull away. Two more from Stein and a three from Chupp had the game at 17-9 at the end of the first.

Both sides went on a bit of a cold streak to start the second. Culver missed its first four shots and had three turnovers, but their defense kept the Knights to only one field goal in that time. Amir Gates started the second quarter scoring for the Eagles with a fast break after a steal. Collins had seven with two threes, Farrall had four, and Culver held Bishop Luers to only four points in the quarter to keep their lead big at 28-13 at the end of the first-half.

Bishop Luers started the second half with a quick score off of a Collins turnover but he recovered and responded with a three to make up for it. Stein had two, Farrall had four, Fola Fayemi had two, Collins added another bucket to give him five for the quarter, and Macheca had a big three to beat the buzzer at the end of the quarter to extend the lead to 21 as Culver led 44-23 at the end of the third.

The fourth quarter was Culver's best scoring quarter with 18 as the Eagles sealed the win. Jokubas Skurdenis, Stein, and Farrall combined to make the Eagles first three shots, all layups against the pressure from Fort Wayne. Farrall had six in the quarter to finish his night with 17 making him the leading scorer of the day. Collins added a bucket, Fayemi had two scores and a free throw, and Gates had a free throw to round out scoring for the quarter as the game ended 62-37.

The Eagles had a few standout performances today. Farrall and Collins led in scoring with 17 and 15 respectively. Macheca had a solid game with seven assists, three rebounds, and a lot of physicality. Finally, Freshman Miles Barger and Junior Luke Vincent got their first varsity minutes at the end of the game.

Culver has a week off before they play Dowagiac Union at home next Tuesday at 7:30.
